TüBingen - Phase 2

Phase 2 aims at developing concepts for visualization in relation to the data format of phase 1.

First we want to develop:
  • Online-generated transcription modes for Hildegard's songs encoded in meiNeumes.
Depending on the user's selection these could be f.ex. square notation or so called "Eierkohlen"-notation:

    square notation
Transcription of the beginning of the antiphone O splendidissima gemma in square notation

    Eierkohlennotation
Transcription of the beginning of the antiphone O splendidissima gemma in "Eierkohlen"-notation

  • Visualisation of variant readings and of the critical commentary.
The visualisation could be included into a web-based tool for the digital critical edition of Hildegard's songs as shown in the simulation below. This would largely improve the traditional working of musicologists with editions, facsimiles and/or manuscripts and a separate critical commentary as seen below:

Working with editions and critical commentary
The example shows how a musicologist working with the songs of Hildegard von Bingen would work in the traditional way using editions, facsimiles and/or manuscripts and the critical commentary.
The verbal information of the separately edited critical commentary first has to be re-translated into muscial information, to be located in the edition and then to be compared with the facsimiles of the two main sources.

    Simulation
The simulation illustrates variant readings and the usage of facsimiles for the antiphone O splendidissima gemma within a tool for digital critical music editions.
The lower window contains a transcription including the neume signs and a variant reading is highlighted. This reading is shown together with the corresponding part of the facsimile and of the critical commentary in the upper right half.
This simulation supports in addition the possibility to link audio- and video-files with the notation. All transcriptions and visualisations are generated out of the same XML-file with the encoding of the antiphone.
